The Masked Face

Even in laughter
The heart may ache and cry out,
A masked face rejoice;
Yet sorrow’s dulled eyes peer through –
Tears of grief or pain, not joy

Through the Wilderness #NaPoWriMo2017 #GloPoWriMo2017

Through darkest valleys
Panting jackals
Marauding lions
Righteous paths
Lead me into
Green pastures
Within the wilderness
Quiet waters
Amid the parched land
A refuge for flocks
A stronghold
For the shepherd

The official prompt for Day 5 to write a poem that is based in the natural world: it could be about a particular plant, animal, or a particular landscape. But it should be about a slice of the natural world that you have personally experienced and optimally, one that you have experienced often. Try to incorporate specific details while also stating why you find the chosen place or plant/animal meaningful.

This contribution to Na/GloPoWriMo is based on images from the Psalms reflecting personal experience of the spiritual wilderness, and the certain hope of finding a way through.

A Champion Laid Low

Goliath of Gath
The Philistines’ champion
Standing defiant

“Israel, who stands for thee?”

Saul called on David
With his sling and five smooth stones
Standing in God’s name

“Who defies the living God?”

As armies looked on
The boy defeated his foe
Standing in vict’ry

Truly, the Lord was with him
