Justice in the Courts – a lament

Hate evil, love good;
Maintain justice in the courts.

There are those who turn justice into bitterness,
And cast righteousness to the ground;
There are those who hate those who uphold honour and justice,
And detest the one who tells the truth;
There are those who oppress the innocent, take bribes,
And obstruct the poor from justice in the courts.

Though you have built stone mansions,
You shall not live in them;
Though you have planted lush vineyards,
You shall not drink their wine;
And there will be wailing in all the streets,
And cries of anguish in every public square.

Hate evil, love good;
Maintain justice in the courts.

written in response to today’s prompt at The Daily Post, and inspired by Amos 5:1-17, a lament and call to repentance.
