Thursday is Verse Day @FaithUnlocked – 1 John 4:16-21

God is love,
and whoever abides in love
abides in God,
and God abides in him.

By this is love perfected with us,
so that we may have confidence
for the day of judgement,
because as he is
so also are we in this world.

There is no fear in love,
but perfect love casts out fear.

For fear has to do with punishment,
and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.
We love because he first loved us.
If anyone says, “I love God”, and hates his brother, he is a liar;
for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen
cannot love God whom he has not seen.
And this commandment we have from him:
whoever loves God must also love his brother.

– 1 John 4:16-21 (ESV)

Prayers for 26 October 2014

Almighty God,

From whom all thought of truth and peace proceed, make your ways known upon earth, your saving power among all peoples. Renew your church in holiness and help us to serve You with joy. Guide the leaders of all nations, that justice may prevail throughout the world. Let the needy never be forgotten, nor the hope of the poor be taken away.
Make us instruments of your peace and let your glory be over all the earth.

Bring light out of this present time’s darkness and hope from despair that guided by your Holy Spirit, all your children may find a new way forward together based on your love for us all.

Hold in your loving arms, all those who have been caught up in conflict. We pray for those forced to flee their homes, all who have lost friends, family and possessions and who now face an uncertain future.

Bless our Christian brothers and sisters who have seen the destruction of their churches and communities and for our Muslim neighbours who have also experienced destruction and suffering.

Lord we thank you for bringing leaders into our church family. We pray for your protection over them as they share your love with the people in our area. Inspire them through your Holy Spirit, and let them walk as beacons of hope and grace.

Lord we pray for all those preparing for the Light Party on Friday evening. Guide them and direct their planning. We pray for all the children attending, may they have fun, feel you presence and have a desire to know more of your love.

We give thanks to you God for all those who use our church buildings today, and for those who will do so in the future. We also thank you God for the people you have brought together within our church families, for their range of skills and willingness to serve you. We trust in your provision.

We pray for those who are sick in mind, body or spirit and are in need of your healing touch. We pray for members of our church family, and any others known to us for whom we love and care.

Lord you comfort those who mourn. We especially lift to you the families all those known to us those who are grieving at this time. Through your Holy Spirit provide all that they need in the coming days, weeks, months and beyond. Fill them with Your peace. We also pray for those whose anniversaries fall at this time – may they find your love in the midst of their sorrow.

We thank you for those stepping out to publicly confirm their faith this morning and thank you for their desire to know and love you more and to walk with you always in the certain hope of freedom in you.

Heavenly Father, we lift all these prayers to you through Jesus Christ our Lord;

Thursday is Verse Day @FaithUnlocked – 2 Corinthians 1:20-22

For no matter how many promises God has made,
they are “Yes” in Christ.
And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God.
Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ.
He anointed us,
set his seal of ownership on us,
and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit,
guaranteeing what is to come.

– 2 Corinthians 1:20-22

Quotes on God’s Promises

“God has promised forgiveness to your repentance, but He has not promised tomorrow to your procrastination.”
― Augustine of Hippo

“Let God’s promises shine on your problems.”
― Corrie ten Boom

“I had a choice: I could believe the lies of the devil, in which case I was on my way to suicide, or I could believe in the promises of God, and be taken through my time of trial.”
― Angus Buchan, Faith Like Potatoes: The Story of a Farmer Who Risked Everything for God

“True faith means holding nothing back. It means putting every hope in God’s fidelity to His Promises.”
― Francis Chan, Crazy Love: Overwhelmed by a Relentless God

“When our trials come, when we feel pain and suffering, when our tears flow again, it is our joy and comfort to lift our faces heavenward and to go on, standing on the promises of God.”
― W.A. Criswell

“If you think God has promised this world will be a five-star hotel, you will be miserable as you live through the normal struggles of life. But if you remember that God promised we would be pilgrims and this world may feel more like a desert or even a prison, you might find your life surprisingly happy.”
― Kevin DeYoung, Just Do Something: A Liberating Approach to Finding God’s Will

“And yet some people actually imagine that the revelation in God’s Word is not enough to meet our needs. They think that God from time to time carries on an actual conversation with them, chatting with them, satisfying their doubts, testifying to His love for them, promising them support and blessings. As a result, their emotions soar; they are full of bubbling joy that is mixed with self-confidence and a high opinion of themselves. The foundation for these feelings, however, does not lie within the Bible itself, but instead rests on the sudden creations of their imaginations. These people are clearly deluded. God’s Word is for all of us and each of us; He does not need to give particular messages to particular people.”
― Jonathan Edwards

“One of the most poisonous of all Satan’s whispers is simply, “Things will never change.” That lie kills expectation, trapping our heart forever in the present. To keep desire alive and flourishing, we must renew our vision for what lies ahead. Things will not always be like this. Jesus has promised to “make all things new.” Eye has not seen, ear has not heard all that God has in store for his lovers, which does not mean “we have no clue so don’t even try to imagine,” but rather, you cannot outdream God. Desire is kept alive by imagination, the antidote to resignation. We will need imagination, which is to say, we will need hope. ”
― John Eldredge, The Sacred Romance: Drawing Closer to the Heart of God

“You are indicting your unbelief by distrusting God’s goodness, and you are bringing greater misery upon yourself by disparaging God’s blessing. For if you had trust in God’s grace and promises, you would undoubtedly be supported. But because you do not hope in the Lord, you will never prosper.”
― Martin Luther, The Sermons of Martin Luther: 7 Volumes

“God never made a promise that was too good to be true.”
― D.L. Moody

“Every promise of Scripture is a writing of God, which may be pleaded before Him with this reasonable request, ‘Do as Thou hast said.’ The Heavenly Father will not break His Word to His own child.”
― Charles H. Spurgeon

“God never calls His people to accomplish anything without promising to supply their every need.”
― Charles R. Swindoll

“We can’t, and we should not, compare sufferings. We come together as a family of God, hand in hand. And then together coming and standing upon the promises of God, knowing that no matter who you are, no matter what you’re going through, that God knows it, He is with you, He is going to pull you through.”
― Nick Vujicic

“God’s plan is not to abandon this world, the world which he said was “very good.” Rather, he intends to remake it. And when he does he will raise all his people to new bodily life to live in it. That is the promise of the Christian gospel.”

The Secret Place

He who dwells in that mysterious place,
The most secret place of the Most High,
He shall be cared for, protected and shielded,
Beneath the shadow of the Almighty.
When you pray, go into your room;
When you have shut your door,
Pray to God your Father
Who is within that secret place.
If you love His Son,
You will keep His words;
And the Father will know you and love you;
And they shall come to you:
Father, Son and Spirit;
They shall make a home with you,
For the Spirit of truth has come.
You may know Him,
For He dwells with you,
And He will remain within you
In that secret place.

“I have been led to an inner place where I had not been before. It is the place within me where God has chosen to dwell. It is the place where I am held safe in the embrace of an all-loving Father who calls me by name…..It is the place where I can taste the joy and peace that are not of this world.”
– Henri M. J. Nouwen

Thursday is Verse Day @FaithUnlocked – 1 Samuel 15:22-23

Samuel replied:

“Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices
as much as in obeying the Lord?
To obey is better than sacrifice,
and to heed is better than the fat of rams.
For rebellion is like the sin of divination,
and arrogance like the evil of idolatry.
Because you have rejected the word of the Lord,
he has rejected you as king.”

– 1 Samuel 15:22-23
