First Poet, First Poem

In the beginning was the Word,
And the Word was with God,
And the Word was God.
He was with God in the beginning,
When God created the heaven and the earth.
The earth was without form, and void;
Darkness was upon the face of the deep;
And the Spirit of God
Moved upon the face of the waters.

Through the Word all things were made;
Without him nothing was made
That has been made.
In him was life,
And that life was the light
Of all mankind.

When God said, “Let there be light”:
There was light.
The light shines in the darkness:
The darkness has not overcome it.
God called the light Day,
And the darkness he called Night.

God let there be lights
In the firmament of heaven,
To divide the day from the night;
And He let them be for signs,
And for seasons,
And for days, and for years;
He let them be for lights
In the firmament of the heavens
To give light upon the earth

God made two great lights;
The greater light to rule the day,
The lesser light to rule the night:
He made the stars also.
He set them in the firmament of the heaven
To give light upon the earth,
And to rule over the day and over the night,
And to divide the light from the darkness.

God said, “Let there be a firmament
In the midst of the waters,
And let it divide the waters from the waters.”
God made the firmament,
And divided the waters
Above and below the firmament:
And God called the firmament, ‘Heaven’.

God said, “Let the waters under heaven
Be gathered together unto one place,
And let the dry land appear”; and it was so.
God called the dry land ‘Earth’,
And the gathering of the waters called he ‘Seas’ .

And God said, “Let the waters
Bring forth abundantly moving creatures,
And birds that may fly above the earth
In the open firmament of heaven.”
So God created great whales,
And every living creature that moves,
Which the waters brought forth abundantly,
And God blessed them, saying,
“Be fruitful, and multiply,
And fill the waters in the seas,
And let birds multiply over the earth.”

God let the Earth bring forth grass,
The herb yielding seed,
And the fruit tree yielding fruit.
He let the earth bring forth living creatures,
And every beast of the earth:

God said, “Let us make man in our image,
After our likeness:
And let him have dominion
Over the fish of the sea,
And over the birds of the air,
And over the beasts,
And over all the Earth,
And over every thing which moves upon the Earth.”
So God created man in his own image,
In the image of God created he him;
Male and female He created them.

God blessed them,
And He said to them,
“Be fruitful, and multiply,
And replenish the earth;
Subdue it, and have dominion
Over the fish of the sea,
And the birds of the air,
And over every living thing
That moves upon the earth.”

God said, “Behold,
I have given you every herb bearing seed,
And every tree, bearing fruit:
To you it shall be for meat.
And to every beast of the earth,
And to every bird of the air.”
And it was so.

Then God saw every thing that He had made,
And, behold,
It was very good.
