Swing Low, Sweet Chariot

A historic American spiritual song. The earliest known recording was in 1909, by the Fisk Jubilee Singers of Fisk University. It is also the unofficial anthem of the English Rugby team.

Swing low, sweet chariot
Coming forth to carry me home,
Swing low, sweet chariot,
Coming forth to carry me home.

I looked over Jordan, and what did I see
Coming forth to carry me home?
A band of angels coming after me,
Coming forth to carry me home.

Chorus

Sometimes I’m up, and sometimes I’m down,
(Coming forth to carry me home)
But still my soul feels heavenly bound.
(Coming forth to carry me home)

Chorus

The brightest day that I can say,
Coming forth to carry me home)
When Jesus washed my sins away.
(Coming forth to carry me home)

Chorus

If I get there before you do,
(Coming forth to carry me home)
I’ll cut a hole and pull you through.
(Coming forth to carry me home)

Chorus

If you get there before I do,
(Coming forth to carry me home)
Tell all my friends I’m coming too.
(Coming forth to carry me home)

Chorus

Sleep, now

Softly, gently, come the purposed steps
Which carry me off to sleep;
Comforting, soothing my heart with every pace.
Onward, upward as I drift
From this waking realm, to a place
Where He’s seen my name is writ;
Meeting, greeting all my brothers and sisters,
Joining in celebration, finding friendship’s grace,
Singing, and dancing with angel hosts,
Bathed in warmth and light of His glorious flame;
Kneeling to the Lion who loved,
Daring to gaze on his shining face.
Praising,
Hailing
The mighty Lamb who gave His life and saved,
Bowing humbly forever now,
In our perfect resting place.

Quotes on the Holy Spirit

“Will God ever ask you to do something you are not able to do? The answer is yes–all the time! It must be that way, for God’s glory and kingdom. If we function according to our ability alone, we get the glory; if we function according to the power of the Spirit within us, God gets the glory. He wants to reveal Himself to a watching world.”
― Henry T. Blackaby, Experiencing the Spirit: The Power of Pentecost Every Day

“Fruit is always the miraculous, the created; it is never the result of willing, but always a growth. The fruit of the Spirit is a gift of God, and only He can produce it. They who bear it know as little about it as the tree knows of its fruit. They know only the power of Him on whom their life depends”
― Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Cost of Discipleship

“I want to live so that I am truly submitted to the Spirit’s leading on a daily basis. Christ said its better for us that the Spirit came and I want to live like that is true. I don’t want to keep crawling when I have the ability to fly.”
― Francis Chan, Forgotten God: Reversing Our Tragic Neglect of the Holy Spirit

“Those in whom the Spirit comes to live are God’s new Temple. They are, individually and corporately, places where heaven and earth meet.”
― N.T. Wright, Simply Christian: Why Christianity Makes Sense
